Well-dressed for all kinds of weather

Layering guide

Are you sometimes unsure how you should dress in order to maintain an optimal body temperature in all kinds of weather? If so, we recommend the layer upon layer method, which is fantastic as it helps you avoid getting too hot or cold, regardless of your physical activity level. But what types of clothing should the different layers consist of? The simple answer is provided here in this guide to dressing with the 3-layer method.

Layer 1 – the innermost, moisture-wicking layer

Closest to the body, you need a thin layer that can keep you warm and dry. This could be thermal underwear or ski underwear. The innermost layer has to be stretchy so that it doesn’t feel tight anywhere when you move, and it must be able to transport excess heat and moisture away from the body. You can achieve this by choosing an inner layer in polyester, which provides the moisture-wicking effect that’s important for those who are physically active. Wool is also a possible choice as the innermost layer. Wool has moisture-wicking properties, and is anti-bacterial and self-cleaning, so doesn’t start to smell as easily. Remember that wool requires a gentle wash with wool detergent.

Layer 2 – the middle, insulating layer

The middle layer should be able to both provide insulation and direct moisture away from your body. For this purpose you can choose a fleece sweater or jacket, a synthetic fur jacket or a woollen sweater. All of these materials have air pockets that are heated by the body and act as insulators. And of course, the thicker the middle layer is, the warmer it gets. A good piece of advice is to take off the middle layer when you are very physically active, and put it back on again when you’re standing still or taking a break. That way, you avoid your body getting cold.

Layer 3 – the outer, protective layer

The outer layer should protect you from the cold, wind and rain. With a jacket that has a membrane or a coated surface, the jacket is breathable and moisture is able to penetrate through to the outside of the fabric where it evaporates, keeping your body dry. We recommend choosing an outer layer with taped seams to prevent water from getting in. At the same time, it should be lightweight, durable and allow you freedom to move. You can use a shell jacket or rainwear as an outer layer, and switch to a warm winter jacket when it gets very cold.
